What is Gemmology
Gemmology is the scientific study of gemstones, which often includes the mineralogical study of fundamental issues such as formation, genesis, locations, physical properties and identification of gemstones. Includes basic knowledge of structural, crystallographic, chemical - physical characteristics and properties of gemstones. It also includes how the gemstones are used in jewelry.
Gemmology deals with the types and varieties of gemstones and with synthetic stones and their imitations. It also deals with organic stones such as amber, pearls, corals.
How Gemmology is used
Practically gemology refers to the application of knowledge of the characteristics and properties of gemstones in identification or separation of synthetics and their imitations.
